Preventis SmarTest Calprotectin Home

Self-testing of faecal calprotectin levels at home for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)

SmarTest® faecal calprotectin home test is a simple-to-use inflammatory bowel disease stool test that enables individuals with Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative colitis to monitor their disease activity at home. Patients can use the quantitative calprotectin test at home, or indeed anywhere, with minimum test preparation or disruption to their day. This in vitro bowel inflammation test measures calprotectin using gold-conjugated anti-calprotectin antibodies in a lateral flow test in conjunction with a smartphone app which quantifies and reports the result so that patients and providers can evaluate the effectiveness of treatment controlling the disease.

The SmarTest app scans and analyses the faecal calprotectin test result according to the intensity of the control and test lines on the lateral flow test. The quantitative results of the test are then sent automatically to the Online Portal for the patient’s IBD clinical team to monitor remotely.

What is a faecal calprotectin test for?

The SmarTest faecal calprotectin test is a home test kit that allows patients to determine their faecal calprotectin level in the comfort of their home using a handy lateral flow test kit and smartphone app. A stool sample with a raised calprotectin concentration is indicative of intestinal inflammation and helps determine inflammatory bowel disease activity.

What can cause high faecal calprotectin levels?

Inflammation of the intestinal tract causes elevated or high calprotectin levels in a stool sample, although this can be caused by several factors including intestinal tissue damage, bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections, certain drugs, and cancer. The faecal calprotectin range can vary with the cause and severity of inflammation. Monitoring faecal calprotectin levels over time and comparing to a base-line reading can help improve outcomes for inflammatory bowel diseases.

Can inflammatory bowel disease be detected from a stool sample?

A number of Inflammatory markers in stool can be checked to help identify bowel inflammation. Faecal calprotectin is one such marker of intestinal inflammation and is used routinely in the diagnosis and monitoring of IBD. Stool tests for inflammatory bowel disease help to differentiate between IBD and non-inflammatory bowel conditions such as IBS, as well as help monitor disease activity in IBD to avert potential relapses and disease flares. Using a calprotectin test at home is a useful way to enable remote monitoring of patients with IBD.

Can you test calprotectin at home?

The Preventis SmarTest calprotectin home test kit was designed to allow patients access to one of the most clinically valid inflammatory markers in stool remotely. The patient can take a faecal calprotectin test in the privacy of their home to monitor their calprotectin levels. With the Preventis SmarTest system, every time a patient performs a test, they use the free SmarTest app to read the result of their lateral flow test. The faecal calprotectin result is automatically synced with the Doctors Online Portal so their IBD team can monitor the patient’s disease activity remotely.
